Nation Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)

The NDIS

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provides funding to eligible people with disability so they can live more independently, build skills, participate in their community, and improve their overall quality of life.

The NDIS now supports over 500,000 Australians, including around 80,000 children with developmental delay, helping them receive early supports that lead to better long‑term outcomes.

What the NDIS Helps With

The NDIS provides funding that can support you to:

  • spend more time with family and friends

  • increase your independence

  • build new skills

  • access work, volunteering, or community activities

  • improve your daily living and quality of life

The NDIS also connects people with disability to mainstream and community services, such as:

  • doctors and health services

  • community groups and support groups

  • sporting clubs and recreation programs

  • libraries, schools, and education supports

  • state and territory government services

Am I Eligible for the NDIS?

You may be able to apply for the NDIS if you meet the disability or early intervention requirements. These questions are a guide only — the final eligibility decision is made by the NDIA (National Disability Insurance Agency).

If you think you may be eligible, you can:

  • Contact your local NDIS office or NDIS partner for help connecting to local disability supports or to apply.

  • Phone the NDIS on 1800 800 110 for support with the application process.

If You Are Found Eligible

If the NDIA approves your access request, you will receive an access decision letter. Your next step is to create your NDIS plan.

Creating Your NDIS Plan

Your plan is a written agreement developed with you. Every plan is different because it reflects your goals, needs, and circumstances.

During your planning conversation, you will be asked about:

  • how you are managing in different areas of your life

  • what goals you want to pursue

  • what supports you need to live safely and independently

This information helps the NDIA design a plan that provides the right supports for you.

Using Your NDIS Funding

Once your plan is approved, you can start using your funding. You will be supported to:

  • understand your budgets

  • choose providers

  • use the myplace portal

  • begin your funded supports

There are different types of budgets in your plan, and each one can be used for specific supports.

Changing or Updating Your Plan

Your plan reassessment is your opportunity to review your supports and check whether they are still helping you work toward your goals.

If your needs or circumstances change, your plan can be updated to ensure it continues to meet your requirements.
